Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the UK and around the world.

According to Cancer Research UK, one in two people will get some form of cancer in their lifetime. However, thanks to advances in medicine and growing interests in health and wellbeing, the survival rate has increased from standing at one-in-four people to two-in-four people (since 1970).

In the US, the Food and Drug Administration used World Cancer Day to spread the message that every cigarette smoked poses a greater health risk to a smoker.

According to the FDA, smokers are at greater risk of developing lung cancer today than in the sixties.

“Doctors have known for years that smoking causes most lung cancers. It’s still true today, when nearly 9 out of 10 lung cancers are caused by smoking cigarettes. In fact, smokers have a greater risk for lung cancer today than they did in 1964, even though they smoke fewer cigarettes. One reason may be changes in how cigarettes are made and what chemicals they contain.”

Here is how those around the globe called on smokers to quit for good, in raising cancer awareness on World Cancer Day.
